eSIM vs physical SIM: which should travellers choose?

Updated · prices in USD from our live catalog

Short answer: An eSIM is installed by scanning a QR code, so you can set up data before you leave and never swap a card. A physical SIM works in phones without eSIM support, but you have to buy it, insert it and store your own SIM somewhere safe. If your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, an eSIM is usually the more convenient option for travel.

Questions

Is an eSIM less secure than a physical SIM?

No. An eSIM can't be removed from a lost phone and moved to another device the way a plastic card can.

Can I switch between eSIM and physical SIM?

Yes. Phones that support eSIM let you choose which line to use for mobile data in settings.

Does a travel eSIM include a phone number?

No. These plans are data-only. Your main SIM stays in the phone, so your usual number keeps working for calls and texts where your home carrier allows it, and messaging apps work over the eSIM data.

Is my phone compatible?

You need an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone. Check the compatible devices list, or dial *#06# and look for an EID number.

When does the plan start?

Validity normally starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, so you can install it at home before you fly.
